Driving Time Calculator

Calculate total driving time from distance, average speed, and stop count.
Returns drive time, rest stop time, and total trip duration in miles or kilometers.

Estimated Trip Time

Driving time estimation goes beyond simple distance ÷ speed. Real-world trips involve traffic, road type variations, mandatory rest stops, fuel stops, and the difference between highway cruising speed and urban stop-and-go driving.

Base driving time formula:

Drive Time = Distance ÷ Average Speed

Total trip time with stops:

Total Trip Time = Drive Time + Stop Time

Stop Time = (Fuel Stops × 15 min) + (Rest Stops × Duration) + (Meal Stops × Duration)

Recommended stop frequency:

  • Fuel stops: every 250–350 miles depending on tank size and fuel economy
  • Rest breaks: at least every 2 hours of driving (road safety recommendation)
  • Legal driving limits (commercial drivers, FMCSA): 11 hours driving max, 14-hour duty window, 30-minute break after 8 hours

Worked example: A road trip from Dallas, TX to Chicago, IL — approximately 925 miles:

  • Highway average speed: 65 mph
  • Base drive time: 925 ÷ 65 = 14.2 hours
  • Fuel stops needed: 925 ÷ 300 ≈ 3 stops × 15 min = 45 minutes
  • Rest/meal stops: 3 stops × 30 min = 90 minutes
  • Total trip time: 14.2 + 0.75 + 1.5 = 16.5 hours → split across 2 days is recommended

Speed adjustments by road type:

Road Type Typical Average Speed
Interstate highway (rural) 65–75 mph
US highway (mixed) 50–60 mph
State route / secondary 40–55 mph
City/urban driving 20–35 mph
Mountain roads 30–45 mph

EV road trip considerations: Electric vehicles require charging stops every 150–250 miles depending on model and conditions. A 30–45 minute DC fast charge adds significant time vs. gasoline fill-ups. Plan routes around charging station availability using apps like PlugShare or A Better Route Planner.
