Total Transition Time
Transitions are often called the “fourth discipline” of triathlon — a skilled triathlete can save 2–5 minutes over an inexperienced one in T1 and T2 combined, without being fitter or faster.
T1 (Swim to Bike) typically involves:
- Removing wetsuit (practice makes this fast — 15–30 seconds)
- Removing swim cap and goggles
- Putting on helmet (must be buckled before touching the bike)
- Putting on cycling shoes (or run in socks to the mount line)
- Grabbing nutrition and sunglasses
T2 (Bike to Run) typically involves:
- Racking the bike
- Removing helmet
- Changing shoes (cycling to running)
- Grabbing race belt with number, hat, sunscreen
Tips to reduce transition time:
- Elastic laces eliminate shoe-tying time (save 20–45 seconds per shoe change)
- Wetsuit practice: Remove the top half while running from the water to the bike
- Pre-race setup: Lay everything out in order of use, open all zippers and velcro
- No unnecessary items: Every item costs time — don’t add things you won’t use
- Flying mounts/dismounts: Advanced technique of mounting/dismounting without stopping (saves 5–15 seconds)
Typical T1 times:
- Elite / pro: 30–60 seconds
- Competitive age grouper: 1–2 minutes
- Recreational / beginner: 2–4 minutes
Typical T2 times:
- Elite / pro: 20–40 seconds
- Competitive age grouper: 45 seconds to 1.5 minutes
- Recreational / beginner: 1.5–3 minutes
