International Shoe Sizing Systems
Shoe sizes vary significantly between countries, making international shopping confusing. All systems are ultimately based on foot length, but they use different scales and starting points.
US Sizing US sizes differ for men and women. Men’s sizes run from roughly 6 to 15, women’s from 5 to 12. A US men’s 9 fits a foot about 26.2 cm (10.3 inches) long. US women’s sizes run about 1.5 sizes smaller than men’s for the same foot length.
European (EU) Sizing EU sizes (also called Paris Points) are based on foot length in units of ⅔ of a centimeter. EU size 43 fits a foot of approximately 43 × (2/3 cm) = 28.7 cm. EU sizing is the same for men and women — only the last shape (width and toe box) differs.
UK Sizing UK sizes run smaller than US men’s by 0.5 sizes. A US men’s 9 = UK 8.5. Like US sizing, UK men’s and women’s sizes differ. The UK system is also used in Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand.
Japanese Sizing Japan measures foot length directly in centimeters (with 0.5 cm increments), making it the most intuitive system. A US men’s size 9 is approximately JP 27 (foot length ≈ 26–27 cm). Japanese sizes are unisex.
Width Shoe width matters as much as length. Standard men’s width is D; standard women’s width is B. Width codes in order of narrowest to widest: AAAA, AAA, AA, A, B, C, D, E, EE, EEE, EEEE. However, most international sizing only specifies length — consult brand-specific width guides.
