Wedding Seating Arrangement Calculator
Calculate how many tables you need for your wedding reception based on guest count, table shape, and table size.
Wedding Seating Arrangement planning requires knowing how many tables fit your guest count and what configuration works best in your venue.
The basic formula:
Tables Needed = Total Guests / Seats Per Table
Common table configurations:
Round tables (most popular for weddings):
- 48-inch (122 cm) round: seats 6 comfortably
- 60-inch (152 cm) round: seats 8 comfortably (most common)
- 72-inch (183 cm) round: seats 10 comfortably
Rectangular/banquet tables:
- 6-foot (183 cm) table: seats 6 (3 per side)
- 8-foot (244 cm) table: seats 8 (4 per side)
- If using one side only (facing stage): divide capacity by 2
Long farmhouse/harvest tables:
- Typically seat 8-12 depending on length
- Very popular for rustic and garden weddings
- Create a communal, family-style atmosphere
Space requirements per table (including chairs and walkways):
- 60-inch round table: needs about 12×12 feet (3.7×3.7 m) of floor space
- 72-inch round table: needs about 14×14 feet (4.3×4.3 m) of floor space
- 8-foot rectangular: needs about 12×6 feet (3.7×1.8 m) of floor space
- Head table: needs extra space, typically 3-4 feet (1 m) clearance on all sides
Additional space to reserve:
- Dance floor: 3 square feet (0.28 m²) per guest expected to dance (typically 40-60% of guests)
- DJ/band setup: 100-200 square feet (9-19 m²)
- Bar area: 40-60 square feet (3.7-5.6 m²)
- Cake table: 12-16 square feet (1.1-1.5 m²)
- Gift table: 12-16 square feet (1.1-1.5 m²)
- Guest book table: 6-9 square feet (0.6-0.8 m²)
- Buffet line: 100-200 square feet (9-19 m²) if buffet style
- Walkways between tables: minimum 4 feet (1.2 m) wide
Seating etiquette tips:
- Seat the bridal party at a head table or sweetheart table
- Keep families together but mix friend groups to encourage socializing
- Seat elderly guests away from speakers and close to exits
- Seat children together (consider a kids table with activities)
- Place the head table where all guests can see the couple
