Wood Finish Coats and Coverage Calculator

Calculate how many coats of finish you need, how much product to buy, and total dry time for polyurethane, lacquer, oil, wax, and other wood finishes.

Finish Plan

Choosing the Right Number of Coats More coats build more film thickness, providing better protection and a more lustrous appearance. However, each finish type has an optimal coat count — over-coating can cause adhesion problems, cloudiness, or wrinkling.

Typical Coat Counts Polyurethane (oil-based): 3 coats, sanding between coats with 220 grit. Waterborne polyurethane: 3-4 coats (thinner film per coat). Lacquer: 4-6 thin coats. Shellac: 3-5 coats. Tung/Danish oil: 3-6 thin wiped coats. Wax: 2-3 coats. Hard wax oil: 2-3 coats.

Coverage Rates Oil-based finishes: ~400 sq ft per quart. Waterborne: ~350 sq ft per quart. Lacquer (sprayed): ~300 sq ft per quart. Wiping oils: ~500 sq ft per quart (thin application). These are approximate — always check product label.

Between-Coat Sanding Sanding between coats with 220 or 320 grit removes dust nibs and surface imperfections and improves adhesion. Do not sand the final coat — buff with 0000 steel wool or polishing compound instead for a smooth final finish.
