Pocket Hole Spacing Calculator

Calculate pocket hole spacing, number of screws, and screw length for any joint.
Find the right setup for face frames, cabinet carcasses, and furniture with pocket hole joinery.

Pocket Hole Layout

What Is Pocket Hole Joinery? Pocket hole joinery uses an angled pre-drilled hole to drive a screw at an angle into the mating piece. The drill creates a counterbore (pocket) at an angle (typically 15°) and a pilot hole through the face. Invented in its modern form by Craig Sommerfeld (Kreg Tool Company, United States, 1986). Pocket screws pull the joint tight without clamps or complex setup — very popular for cabinetry and furniture.

Screw Length Selection The screw must penetrate deeply into the mating piece without breaking through the surface. Rule of thumb: screw length = 1.5 × material thickness of the mating piece (minimum). Kreg standard recommendations: 3/4" (19 mm) material: 1-1/2" screw 1/2" (12 mm) material: 1-1/4" screw 1-1/2" (38 mm) material: 2-1/2" screw Use coarse thread screws for softwood and plywood; fine thread for hardwood.

Pocket Hole Spacing For structural joints (face frames, chair rails): space every 6"–8" (150–200 mm). For long edge-to-edge glue joints (panel assembly): every 8"–12" (200–300 mm). For short rails/stiles < 4" (100 mm): 2 pocket holes, centered. Wide panels (> 12"/300 mm): every 6–8" (150–200 mm) along the joint.

When to Use Pocket Holes Face frames: joining rails and stiles; strongest pocket hole application. Cabinet carcass (box assembly): joining sides, bottom, top — fast and reliable. Table aprons to legs: works, but mortise-tenon is stronger for legged furniture. Drawer boxes: very common; use fine thread screws in hardwood drawer sides. NOT recommended: structural members under high tensile load (use mortise-tenon or dowels).

Jig Settings (Kreg) Material thickness setting: matches the thickness of the piece being drilled. Drill guide: 1/2" (12.7 mm) guide for most pocket holes. Stop collar: set based on material thickness. Clamp: pocket hole clamp keeps boards flush during driving.
