Length Contraction Formula

Calculate the relativistic length contraction of an object moving at relativistic speeds.
A key result of Einstein's special theory of relativity.

The Formula

L = L₀ × √(1 − v²/c²)

Length contraction is a fundamental consequence of Einstein's special theory of relativity (1905). An object moving at velocity v relative to an observer appears shorter — in the direction of motion — than when it is at rest. The object does not physically compress; rather, the measurement of length depends on relative motion between observer and object.

Variables

SymbolMeaningUnit
LObserved (contracted) length as measured by a stationary observermeters (m)
L₀Proper length — the object's length in its own rest framemeters (m)
vRelative velocity between the object and the observerm/s
cSpeed of light in a vacuum = 2.998 × 10⁸ m/sm/s
γLorentz factor = 1/√(1 − v²/c²)dimensionless

The formula can also be written as L = L₀ / γ, where γ (gamma) is the Lorentz factor. At everyday speeds, γ ≈ 1 and length contraction is completely negligible. At 86.6% of the speed of light, γ = 2, so lengths are halved. As v approaches c, γ approaches infinity and the observed length approaches zero.

Example 1

A spaceship is 100 meters long in its own rest frame. It flies past Earth at 0.8c (80% the speed of light). How long does it appear to an observer on Earth?

v = 0.8c, so v²/c² = 0.64

L = 100 × √(1 − 0.64)

L = 100 × √0.36

L = 100 × 0.6

L = 60 meters — the ship appears 40% shorter to the Earth observer

Example 2

The same 100-meter spaceship now travels at 0.99c. What is its observed length?

v²/c² = 0.9801

L = 100 × √(1 − 0.9801)

L = 100 × √0.0199

L = 100 × 0.1411

L ≈ 14.1 meters — the ship appears just 14% of its rest length at 99% the speed of light

When to Use It

Use the length contraction formula when:

  • Solving special relativity problems involving high-speed objects
  • Analyzing particle physics — protons in the LHC experience extreme length contraction
  • Understanding why muons created in the upper atmosphere reach Earth's surface despite their short half-lives
  • Designing thought experiments in relativistic mechanics

Important: Length contraction only occurs along the direction of motion. Dimensions perpendicular to the motion are unchanged. The contraction is real and measurable — it is not an optical illusion. It is a genuine geometric property of spacetime.

Length contraction is the spatial companion to time dilation, where moving clocks run slower. Both effects are consequences of the same Lorentz transformation equations and have been confirmed experimentally many times.
