Asphalt Tonnage Calculator

Calculate how many tons of asphalt you need based on paving area dimensions and desired thickness.
Covers both hot mix and cold patch asphalt.

Enter your paving dimensions and thickness to calculate how many tons of asphalt you need.

Understanding Asphalt Tonnage Calculations

Asphalt is sold by weight, typically in tons, but you measure your paving area by length, width, and thickness. Converting between these measurements requires knowing the density of the asphalt mix you are using. Hot mix asphalt (HMA) is the most common type used for driveways, roads, and parking lots. It typically weighs about 145 pounds per cubic foot, or approximately 2.4 tons per cubic yard. Cold patch asphalt, used for repairs, is slightly lighter at around 140 pounds per cubic foot.

The Basic Formula:

Tonnage = (Length x Width x Thickness) / 27 x Density

Where length and width are in feet, thickness is in feet (divide inches by 12), and density is in tons per cubic yard.

Step-by-Step Calculation:

  1. Measure the length and width of the area in feet
  2. Determine the desired thickness in inches (typically 2 to 4 inches for driveways)
  3. Convert thickness from inches to feet by dividing by 12
  4. Multiply length x width x thickness to get cubic feet
  5. Divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards
  6. Multiply by the asphalt density (approximately 2.4 tons per cubic yard for hot mix)

Typical Thickness Guidelines:

Application Thickness (inches) Thickness (cm)
Residential driveway 2 - 3 in 5 - 7.5 cm
Parking lot 3 - 4 in 7.5 - 10 cm
Commercial road 4 - 6 in 10 - 15 cm
Highway 6 - 8 in 15 - 20 cm
Overlay / resurfacing 1.5 - 2 in 3.8 - 5 cm

Practical Examples:

  • A standard residential driveway measuring 20 feet wide by 40 feet long with 2 inches of asphalt needs approximately 7.1 tons of hot mix asphalt.
  • A small parking lot of 60 feet by 100 feet with 3 inches of thickness requires about 53.3 tons.
  • Always order 5 to 10 percent extra to account for compaction, irregular edges, and waste.

Cost Considerations:

Hot mix asphalt typically costs between 100 and 200 dollars per ton, depending on your location and current oil prices. Delivery fees are usually separate. Most suppliers require a minimum order of several tons for delivery.

Compaction Factor:

Loose asphalt compresses during rolling. The compaction ratio is typically 1.5 to 1, meaning you need 1.5 inches of loose material to achieve 1 inch of compacted thickness. This converter accounts for the final compacted thickness, so order based on the result shown.
