Understanding Bamboo Flooring Coverage

Bamboo flooring is sold in boxes containing a specific number of planks that cover a set square footage. To determine how much flooring to buy, you need to calculate your room area and then add a waste factor for cuts, fitting around obstacles, and potential mistakes during installation. Standard bamboo planks are typically 3.75 inches wide by 37.5 inches long, though wider and longer planks are also available.

The Basic Formula:

Total Area Needed = Room Length x Room Width x (1 + Waste Factor)

Number of Boxes = Total Area Needed / Coverage per Box

Common Plank Sizes:

Plank Type Width Length Thickness
Standard strand 3.75 in (9.5 cm) 37.5 in (95 cm) 0.625 in (15.9 mm)
Wide plank 5.125 in (13 cm) 72 in (183 cm) 0.5 in (12.7 mm)
Click-lock 5 in (12.7 cm) 36 in (91 cm) 0.375 in (9.5 mm)
Engineered bamboo 5.125 in (13 cm) 72 in (183 cm) 0.5 in (12.7 mm)

Waste Factor Guidelines:

The waste factor depends on your room layout and installation pattern. A simple rectangular room with a straight lay pattern needs the least extra material. Complex rooms with many angles, closets, or diagonal installations require more.

  • Simple rectangular room, straight lay: 5 to 7 percent waste
  • L-shaped or irregular room: 8 to 10 percent waste
  • Diagonal installation pattern: 10 to 15 percent waste
  • Herringbone or chevron pattern: 15 to 20 percent waste

Box Coverage:

Most standard bamboo flooring boxes cover approximately 22 to 25 square feet (2.0 to 2.3 square meters). Wide plank boxes may cover 20 to 30 square feet depending on the manufacturer. Always check the specific coverage listed on the box you are purchasing.

Practical Example:

For a room measuring 12 feet by 15 feet (180 square feet or 16.7 square meters) with a straight lay pattern and 7 percent waste factor, you would need 180 x 1.07 = 192.6 square feet of flooring. At 23 square feet per box, that is approximately 8.4 boxes, so you would order 9 boxes. It is always better to round up and have a few extra planks for future repairs than to run short during installation.

Installation Tips:

Bamboo flooring should acclimate in the room where it will be installed for at least 72 hours before installation. Keep the boxes open and let the planks adjust to the room temperature and humidity. This prevents expansion gaps or buckling after installation.
