Byte rate conversions use bytes per second (B/s) as the base unit.
Byte-based units (base 1024 for storage, but network uses 1000):
- 1 KB/s = 1,000 B/s (decimal, as used in networking)
- 1 MB/s = 1,000,000 B/s
- 1 GB/s = 1,000,000,000 B/s
Bit-based units (used by ISPs):
- 1 byte = 8 bits
- 1 Kbps = 1,000 bits/s = 125 B/s
- 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits/s = 125,000 B/s
- 1 Gbps = 1,000,000,000 bits/s = 125,000,000 B/s
Why the confusion? ISPs advertise in bits (Mbps), but downloads show in bytes (MB/s). A 100 Mbps connection downloads at about 12.5 MB/s.
Common references:
- 4G LTE: ~20-50 Mbps (2.5-6.25 MB/s)
- 5G: ~100-1000 Mbps (12.5-125 MB/s)
- Gigabit fiber: 1 Gbps (125 MB/s)
- USB 3.0: up to 5 Gbps (625 MB/s)
