Magnetic flux is the total magnetic field passing through a given area, like counting how many field lines thread through a loop of wire. The SI unit is the weber (Wb). One weber that collapses to zero in one second through a single-turn coil induces exactly one volt, which is Faraday’s law of induction in a sentence. Generators, transformers, and the pickup in an electric guitar all run on changing flux.

Metric prefixes:

CGS units:

  • 1 Wb = 100,000,000 Mx (10⁸ maxwells)
  • 1 kMx = 1,000 Mx = 0.00001 Wb

The maxwell comes from the older cgs system and turns up in legacy magnetics and physics texts. A weber is a huge eight orders of magnitude bigger, which is why maxwell figures look so large for ordinary magnets.

Relationship:

  • Weber = tesla × m² (total flux = field strength × area)

That last line is where the confusion lives. Flux (webers) and flux density (teslas) are not the same thing. Tesla measures how concentrated the field is at a point; weber measures the total field gathered over an area. A strong magnet over a tiny pole face can carry less total flux than a weak field spread across a large one. Mix the two up and your motor or transformer math quietly falls apart.
