Spray rate measures liquid volume applied per unit of area. Used in agriculture, lawn care, and pest control.
Base unit: liters per hectare (L/ha)
Conversion factors:
- 1 gallon/acre = 9.3540 L/ha
- 1 oz/1000 sqft = 3.0515 L/ha
- 1 mL/m² = 10 L/ha
- 1 L/ha = 0.1 mL/m²
Imperial conversions:
- 1 US gallon = 128 fl oz = 3.78541 liters
- 1 acre = 43,560 sqft = 4,046.86 m²
- 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.47105 acres
Common spray rates:
| Application | US Rate | Metric Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Herbicide (lawn) | 1–2 gal/acre | 9–19 L/ha |
| Insecticide | 0.5–1 gal/acre | 5–9 L/ha |
| Fungicide | 2–5 gal/acre | 19–47 L/ha |
| Broadcast spray | 10–40 gal/acre | 94–374 L/ha |
The rate here isn’t a number to take lightly. Apply too little herbicide or pesticide and it simply won’t work; apply too much and you waste product, risk crop damage, and can breach the label limits that exist for safety and the environment. Those rates are set deliberately, not as rough guidance.
The practical trap is that a sprayer’s real output drifts from its rated one. Nozzle wear, pump pressure, and travel speed all change how much actually lands per acre, so a rig that was accurate last season may be over- or under-applying now. Careful operators calibrate by catching the output over a measured area rather than trusting the nozzle’s printed figure. It also pays to watch the unit: gallons per acre and ounces per 1,000 square feet describe the same idea at very different scales, and mixing them up is an easy way to be off by an order of magnitude.
