Typing speed can be measured in several different units. Different industries, countries, and typing tests use different conventions.

Words Per Minute (WPM) is the most common unit in English-speaking countries. A “word” is standardized to 5 characters (including spaces) for consistent comparison. Average typist: 40–60 WPM. Fast typist: 80–100 WPM. Professional: 100+ WPM.

Characters Per Minute (CPM) counts every individual character typed per minute. This is widely used in European countries and many professional typing assessments. Since 1 word = 5 characters: CPM = WPM × 5.

Keystrokes Per Hour (KPH) is common in data-entry and administrative job postings. It counts every keystroke (including corrections, backspaces, and non-letter keys). For a clean-typing conversion, KPH = WPM × 300 (since 1 WPM × 5 chars × 60 min = 300). Many employers list minimum KPH requirements for data entry roles (typically 8,000–10,000 KPH).

Characters Per Second (CPS) is used in competitive typing and technical contexts. CPS = WPM × 5 ÷ 60, so at 60 WPM you type exactly 5 CPS.

Conversion table (based on 1 WPM = 5 characters/word):

WPM CPM KPH CPS
40 200 12,000 3.33
60 300 18,000 5.00
80 400 24,000 6.67
100 500 30,000 8.33

Note: These conversions assume perfect typing (no errors or backspaces). Real-world KPH in data-entry tests may differ because they count all keystrokes, including corrections.
