Annual Commute Cost

Most people think of commute cost as the gas to get to work, period.
The honest math includes tolls, parking, the per-mile depreciation and maintenance hit, and the time you spend that is neither work nor leisure.
For a typical US commuter, that comes to $4,000-12,000 per year.

The math:

annual_cost = (round_trip_miles × workdays × per_mile_cost) + (workdays × parking) + (workdays × tolls) + (workdays × hours × time_value)

The IRS standard mileage rate of $0.67/mile (2026) is the cleanest per-mile cost number to use.
It includes gas, oil, depreciation, repairs, insurance allocation, and registration — basically everything except parking and tolls.
For more granular work, calculate gas separately (miles / MPG × gas price) and add a smaller wear-and-tear figure.

A worked example.
30-mile round trip to office, 230 workdays per year, no tolls, $15/day downtown parking.
Mileage cost: 30 × 230 × $0.67 = $4,623.
Parking: 230 × $15 = $3,450.
Total direct: $8,073.

Now the time piece.
1 hour total commute (30 minutes each way) × 230 days = 230 hours per year.
At $25/hour value (a modest hourly equivalent for someone earning $75,000): 230 × $25 = $5,750.
Total commute cost including time: $13,823 per year.

That is the number that makes remote work and hybrid schedules worth what they are.
A 3-day-in-office hybrid cuts the commute cost roughly 40%, saving $5,500.
Going fully remote saves the entire $13,800 — equivalent to a $20,000 raise after taxes.

Public transit usually wins on direct cost.
A monthly commuter rail pass at $200-350 covers a long commute for $2,400-4,200 per year, less than the gas + parking math for the same drive.
Time-wise, transit is often slower than driving in low-traffic suburbs and faster than driving in major cities, so the time cost depends on the route.

Three practical points.
Carpooling cuts gas and parking proportionally — 2-person carpool drops costs by half if you share equally.
The hidden cost of the commute is the wear pattern that does not show up in the IRS rate: highway-and-stop-light driving wears suspension, brakes, and clutch faster than steady highway-only driving.
And the time-cost number is the most controversial input.
If you commute by transit and read a book, that hour is worth less than the highway driving hour where you cannot do anything else.

The relocation math.
Moving 5 miles closer to work saves a typical commuter about $1,500-2,500 per year in direct costs and 50-80 hours of time.
Across a 5-year residency, that is $7,500-12,500 in cost savings plus 250-400 hours of life back.
Most home buyers do not put a dollar value on commute when comparing houses, but the math is significant.
