Annual Car Cost Calculator
Calculate the true total annual cost of owning your car.
Include fuel, insurance, maintenance, loan payments, and registration for a complete picture.
Total annual car cost is the sum of every recurring expense tied to owning and operating a vehicle. Most drivers significantly underestimate this figure because they only think about the monthly loan payment, not the full picture.
The master formula:
Annual Cost = Fuel + Insurance + Maintenance + (Loan Payment × 12) + Registration + Depreciation + Other
Cost per Mile = Annual Cost ÷ Annual Miles Driven
Cost per Month = Annual Cost ÷ 12
Variable definitions:
- Fuel: annual gasoline or electricity cost
- Insurance: full coverage premium per year
- Maintenance: oil changes, tires, brakes, fluids, unexpected repairs
- Loan Payment: monthly payment × 12 (or $0 if paid off)
- Registration: annual DMV fees and state taxes
- Depreciation: the loss in resale value each year (often the largest hidden cost)
Worked example: A 2022 Honda CR-V with a $450/month loan payment:
- Fuel: $2,400/year (15,000 miles at $0.16/mile)
- Insurance: $1,800/year
- Maintenance: $900/year
- Loan: $450 × 12 = $5,400
- Registration: $250
- Depreciation: $3,200 (approx. 15% of $21,000 value)
- Total: $13,950/year → $1,163/month → $0.93/mile
Average US annual costs by vehicle segment (2024–2025):
| Segment | Annual Cost |
|---|---|
| Small sedan | $8,500–$10,500 |
| Midsize SUV | $11,000–$14,000 |
| Full-size truck | $13,000–$17,000 |
| Electric vehicle | $9,000–$12,000 |
Top cost-reduction strategies:
- Fuel: Maintain proper tire pressure (saves ~3%), avoid aggressive acceleration
- Insurance: Compare quotes annually, raise deductible, bundle home + auto
- Maintenance: Follow the manufacturer schedule, not the dealer upsell
- Depreciation: Buy a vehicle that is 2–3 years old to skip the steepest depreciation curve
- Loan interest: Extra principal payments reduce total interest paid significantly
The cost-per-mile figure is especially useful for comparing owned vehicles against rideshare or rental alternatives.
