DNA Ancestry Percentage by Generation
Calculate what percentage of DNA you share with each generation of ancestors, from parents to great-great-great-grandparents and beyond.
How DNA Inheritance Works You inherit approximately 50% of your DNA from each parent. Each generation back, the percentage is halved — so you share ~25% with each grandparent, ~12.5% with each great-grandparent, and so on.

Actual vs Theoretical Inheritance The 50% figure is theoretical — in practice, autosomal DNA (the kind tested by consumer kits) is inherited in random chunks called segments. This means the actual % can vary:
- From one parent: usually close to 50%, but can range from ~47–53%
- From one grandparent: averages 25%, but real range is roughly 17–34%
- From one great-grandparent: averages 12.5%, range 4–23%
The further back you go, the wider the variation — and there is a chance (statistically, beyond 5–7 generations) that you inherited zero detectable DNA from a specific ancestor, even though you are biologically descended from them.
X-DNA Is Different X-chromosome DNA follows a different inheritance pattern. Males receive X only from their mother. Females receive X from both parents. Consumer DNA tests typically report autosomal DNA, not X-DNA ancestry percentages.
