Porch Materials Estimate

A porch area and material cost calculator helps homeowners and contractors estimate the square footage of a porch deck, the decking boards needed, and the total material cost for framing, decking, railings, and concrete footings.

Formulas: Porch Area = Length × Depth (for rectangular) Decking Linear Feet = (Area ÷ 0.458) × 1.10 waste factor Concrete for Footings = (π × r² × Depth) × Number of Posts Linear Feet of Railing = Length + (2 × Depth)

That railing formula assumes the porch is attached to the house along one long side, which is how most are built, so only the three open sides get railed. A freestanding porch needs the full perimeter instead.

Material components breakdown:

1. Decking: Common decking sizes: 5/4×6 boards (actual 1"×5.5"). Coverage per 12-foot board = 5.5 in wide = 0.458 sq ft per linear foot. Boards needed = Area ÷ 0.458 × 1.10 (10% waste)

2. Framing (joists + beams):

  • Joists: typically 2×8 or 2×10, spaced 16 inches on center, running the depth of the porch
  • Number of joists = (Porch Length × 12 ÷ 16) + 1
  • Beams: size depends on span, so consult a span table before ordering

3. Posts and footings:

  • Posts along the open beam line every 8 feet, plus an extra one on each return side once the porch is more than 8 feet deep
  • Footings must reach below the frost line (24–48 inches depending on climate zone)
  • One 60-lb bag of concrete yields about 0.45 cubic feet

4. Railings (required once the walking surface is more than 30 inches above grade):

  • Top rail, bottom rail, balusters (4 inch maximum gap), and post caps

5. Concrete slab instead of a deck: Pick concrete as the surface and the whole framing question disappears. There are no joists, no beams, and no decking to buy. What you need instead is 4 inches of concrete over 4 inches of compacted base, which the calculator gives you in cubic feet and cubic yards. Ready-mix is sold by the yard, so it rounds the order up to the nearest quarter yard. Cut control joints within 24 hours of the pour, spaced no further apart in feet than about 2.5 times the slab thickness in inches, or the slab will pick its own crack lines.

Worked example: A 16 ft wide by 12 ft deep porch, attached to the house along the 16 ft side.

Area = 16 × 12 = 192 sq ft

Decking (5/4×6, 12-ft boards): 192 ÷ 0.458 × 1.10 = 461 linear feet → 39 boards at 12 ft

Joists (2×8 at 16 inches on center, spanning the 12 ft depth): (16 × 12 ÷ 16) + 1 = 13 joists

Posts: (16 ÷ 8) + 1 = 3 along the front beam, plus 1 on each return side = 5 posts

Concrete footings (12 inch diameter, 36 inch deep, 5 posts): Volume per footing = π × (0.5)² × 3 = 2.36 cu ft Total = 5 × 2.36 = 11.8 cu ft → 27 bags (60-lb bags)

Railing = 16 + (2 × 12) = 40 linear feet

Put a roof over it and that total roughly doubles. Roofing a porch runs somewhere around $10 to $20 per square foot, so 192 sq ft adds $1,900 to $3,800 on its own. The roof is almost always the single biggest line on a covered porch, which is why the cost input for it sits alongside the others below.
