Porch Materials Calculator

Calculate porch materials from length and depth: posts, joists, beams, decking boards, and railing.
Add your own prices for an optional cost breakdown.

Approximate, varies by region/year: pressure-treated $2-4, cedar $4-7, composite $6-12, concrete slab $5-10 per sq ft
Blended rate for joists, beams, posts, and hardware. Typically $3-6 per sq ft of porch.
Wood railing $10-25 per linear ft; composite or metal $25-60. Leave blank if no railing.
Only for a covered porch. Roof framing plus shingles run roughly $10-20 per sq ft. Leave blank for an open porch.
Porch Materials Estimate

A porch area and material cost calculator helps homeowners and contractors estimate the square footage of a porch deck, the decking boards needed, and the total material cost for framing, decking, railings, and concrete footings.

Formulas: Porch Area = Length × Width (for rectangular) Decking Boards = (Area × 1.15 waste factor) ÷ (Board Width × Board Length) Concrete for Footings = (π × r² × Depth) × Number of Posts Linear Feet of Railing = Perimeter − Stair Width

Material components breakdown:

1. Decking: Common decking sizes: 5/4×6 boards (actual 1"×5.5"). Coverage per 12-foot board = 5.5 in wide = 0.458 sq ft per linear foot. Boards needed = Area ÷ 0.458 × 1.10 (10% waste)

2. Framing (joists + beams):

  • Joists: typically 2×8 or 2×10, spaced 16" on center
  • Number of joists ≈ (Porch Length ÷ 1.33) + 1
  • Beams: size depends on span — consult span tables

3. Posts and footings:

  • One post per corner, plus intermediate posts every 8 feet
  • Footings must be below frost line (24–48 inches depending on climate zone)
  • One 60-lb bag of concrete = ~0.45 cubic feet

4. Railings (required for decks > 30" above grade):

  • Top rail, bottom rail, balusters (spaced max 4" apart), and post caps

Worked example: 12×16 foot covered porch. 4 corner posts + 2 intermediate = 6 posts.

Area = 12 × 16 = 192 sq ft

Decking (5/4×6, 12-ft boards): Boards = 192 ÷ 0.458 × 1.10 = 192 ÷ 0.417 = 460 linear feet → 39 boards (12-ft length)

Framing joists (2×8 at 16" OC, 16-ft span): 12 ÷ 1.33 + 1 = 10 joists

Concrete footings (12" diameter, 36" deep, 6 posts): Volume per footing = π × (0.5)² × 3 = 2.36 cu ft Total = 6 × 2.36 = 14.1 cu ft → 32 bags (60-lb bags)

Rough material cost estimate: Decking (pressure-treated 5/4×6): ~$0.85/linear ft × 460 = $391 Framing lumber: ~$280 | Concrete: ~$160 | Hardware/fasteners: ~$120 | Railing (56 LF): ~$840 Total materials: ~$1,791 (labor not included)

These figures are rough national references that move with region, lumber market, and year. The calculator gives you the material counts; enter your own prices for a cost that matches your supplier.
