Roof Area Calculator
Calculate roof area and shingle bundles from building footprint and pitch.
Returns roofing squares with a 10% waste allowance and ridge cap estimate.
Roof area and shingle calculation is one of the most critical steps in any roofing project. Underestimating wastes a trip to the supplier mid-job; overestimating wastes money. The key is converting horizontal footprint area to actual sloped roof surface area using the pitch factor.
Formulas: Slope Factor = √(1 + (Pitch/12)²) Actual Roof Area = Footprint Area × Slope Factor Squares of Roofing = Actual Roof Area ÷ 100 Shingle Bundles = Squares × 3 (for standard 3-tab or dimensional shingles) Waste-adjusted Bundles = Shingle Bundles × (1 + Waste Factor)
Waste factors by roof complexity:
- Simple gable (1–2 planes): 10%
- Hip roof (4 planes): 15%
- Complex roof (multiple valleys, dormers): 20–25%
Pitch and slope factors:
| Pitch (rise/run) | Slope Factor |
|---|---|
| 4/12 (low slope) | 1.054 |
| 6/12 (standard) | 1.118 |
| 8/12 (steep) | 1.202 |
| 10/12 (very steep) | 1.302 |
| 12/12 (45°) | 1.414 |
What a “square” means: One roofing square = 100 square feet of roof surface. Shingles are sold in bundles; 3 bundles cover 1 square for standard 3-tab and dimensional/architectural shingles. Premium designer shingles may use 4 or 5 bundles per square.
Worked example: House footprint: 40 ft × 60 ft = 2,400 sq ft. Gable roof, 6/12 pitch.
Roof footprint (both sides) = 2,400 sq ft (entire house footprint is the base) Actual roof area = 2,400 × 1.118 = 2,683 sq ft Squares = 2,683 ÷ 100 = 26.83 squares Bundles (standard shingles) = 26.83 × 3 = 80.5 bundles With 10% waste: 80.5 × 1.10 = 89 bundles → round to 90
Additional materials:
- Underlayment: 1 roll per 4 squares → 7 rolls
- Ridge cap: 1 bundle per 35 linear feet of ridge
- Drip edge: perimeter in linear feet ÷ 10 (10-ft pieces)
- Roofing nails: 2.5 lbs per square
Cost estimate: Architectural shingles at $35–$50/bundle: 90 × $42 average = $3,780 materials only. Installation labor: $80–$150 per square → $2,146–$4,024 labor. Total installed: $5,900–$7,800 for this size.
