Grain-to-Water Ratio Calculator
Find the perfect water-to-grain ratio for rice, quinoa, oats, barley, and more.
Get exact water amounts and cooking times.
The Grain-to-Water Ratio determines how much water you need to properly cook grains. Too little water and grains stay hard. Too much and they become mushy.
Formula: Water needed = Grain amount × Water ratio
Standard Ratios (Grain : Water):
| Grain | Ratio | Cook Time | Yield |
|---|---|---|---|
| White rice (long grain) | 1 : 1.5 | 15–18 min | 3x |
| White rice (short grain) | 1 : 1.25 | 15–18 min | 2.5x |
| Brown rice | 1 : 2.5 | 40–50 min | 3x |
| Basmati rice | 1 : 1.5 | 15–20 min | 3x |
| Jasmine rice | 1 : 1.25 | 12–15 min | 2.5x |
| Wild rice | 1 : 3 | 45–55 min | 3.5x |
| Quinoa | 1 : 2 | 15–20 min | 3x |
| Rolled oats | 1 : 2 | 5–10 min | 2x |
| Steel-cut oats | 1 : 3 | 20–30 min | 3.5x |
| Pearl barley | 1 : 3 | 30–40 min | 3.5x |
| Bulgur wheat | 1 : 2 | 10–15 min | 3x |
| Couscous | 1 : 1.5 | 5 min (steep) | 2.5x |
| Farro | 1 : 2.5 | 25–35 min | 3x |
| Millet | 1 : 2.5 | 20–25 min | 3.5x |
| Polenta/Cornmeal | 1 : 4 | 25–35 min | 4x |
Measurement Units: Ratios work with any unit — cups, grams, or ounces — as long as both grain and water use the same unit. For precision: 1 cup of dry rice weighs approximately 185 g (6.5 oz). 1 cup of water weighs 237 g (8.4 oz).
Practical Example: To cook 2 cups of brown rice: 2 cups × 2.5 = 5 cups of water. The yield will be about 6 cups of cooked rice (2 × 3x yield factor).
Altitude Adjustment: At high altitudes (above 3,000 ft / 900 m), water boils at a lower temperature. Add approximately 2–4 tablespoons extra water per cup of grain and increase cooking time by 3–5 minutes.
Tips:
- Rinsing rice before cooking removes excess starch and prevents stickiness.
- Let grains rest (covered, off heat) for 5–10 minutes after cooking for better texture.
- For meal prep, cooked grains store well in the refrigerator for 4–5 days.
- A rice cooker uses slightly less water than stovetop methods because less steam escapes.
