Mosaic Tile Calculator
Calculate how many mosaic tiles you need for your project based on surface area and tile size.
Mosaic art involves arranging small pieces of tile, glass, stone, or other materials into a decorative pattern or image. One of the most common challenges for mosaic artists is figuring out exactly how many tiles they need before starting a project. Running out of tiles mid-project can be frustrating, especially if the specific color or batch is no longer available.
The core formula is: Number of Tiles = (Project Area ÷ Individual Tile Area) × (1 + Waste Factor).
Here is what each variable means:
- Project width and height define the total surface area you want to cover, measured in either centimeters or inches. Multiply width by height to get the total area.
- Tile size is the dimension of each individual mosaic piece. Common sizes range from 1 cm × 1 cm (about 0.4 inches) for micro mosaics up to 5 cm × 5 cm (about 2 inches) for standard projects.
- Grout gap is the small space left between tiles that gets filled with grout. Typical grout gaps for mosaics range from 1 mm to 3 mm (about 0.04 to 0.12 inches). This gap reduces the number of tiles needed because each tile effectively occupies slightly more space than its actual size.
- Waste percentage accounts for tiles that break during cutting, tiles with defects, and cutting losses when shaping pieces to fit edges. A waste factor of 10 to 15 percent is standard for most mosaic projects. Intricate designs with lots of curved cuts may need 20 percent or more.
The calculator accounts for the grout gap by adding it to each tile dimension before computing how many tiles fit across the width and height. This gives you a realistic count rather than a theoretical maximum.
For practical planning, always round up your tile order. It is better to have a small surplus than to run short. Many mosaic supply stores sell tiles in sheets or by weight, so knowing your tile count helps you convert to the right purchase quantity. A standard rule of thumb: one square foot of 1-inch tiles contains roughly 144 pieces before accounting for grout spacing.
