Quilt Size Calculator
Calculate quilt dimensions, fabric yardage, and block count for twin, full, queen, and king sizes.
Returns binding yardage and backing fabric requirements.
Quilt sizing and fabric yardage calculations ensure you purchase the right amount of fabric before cutting — avoiding the nightmare of running short mid-project with a discontinued fabric.
Basic quilt area:
Quilt Area (sq in) = Width × Length
Fabric yardage for a solid backing:
Backing Yardage = (Quilt Length + 8 in seam/stretch allowance) × Number of Fabric Widths Needed / 36
Where fabric width is typically 44" or 60" (selvage to selvage).
Block-based patchwork formula:
Blocks Needed = Ceiling(Width / Block Size) × Ceiling(Length / Block Size)
Fabric per color = (Blocks for that color × Piece Area) × Waste Factor (1.1–1.15)
Standard quilt sizes:
| Name | Dimensions | Blocks (12" blocks) |
|---|---|---|
| Baby | 36" × 54" | 3 × 4 = 12 |
| Throw | 50" × 65" | 5 × 6 = 30 |
| Twin | 66" × 90" | 6 × 8 = 48 |
| Full/Double | 81" × 96" | 7 × 8 = 56 |
| Queen | 90" × 108" | 8 × 9 = 72 |
| King | 108" × 108" | 9 × 9 = 81 |
Worked example — Throw quilt (50" × 65") in a 5" half-square triangle block:
- Blocks across: ⌈50/5⌉ = 10 | Blocks down: ⌈65/5⌉ = 13 → 130 blocks
- Two fabrics (alternating): 65 blocks each
- Fabric per block (25 sq in + 10% waste): 27.5 sq in
- Total per fabric: 65 × 27.5 = 1,787.5 sq in = 1.37 yards (at 44" wide fabric)
Batting allowance: Add 3–4 inches to each dimension for the batting (for quilting take-up). Backing needs 4–6 inches total extra on all sides.
