Project Requirements

Cross-stitch thread and fabric quantity calculation ensures you have enough materials for your project without running out mid-stitching — which can be catastrophic if a dye lot is discontinued. The key variables are fabric count, design area, and stitch coverage.

Fabric size formula: Fabric Width = (Design Width in stitches ÷ Fabric Count) + Border Allowance Fabric Height = (Design Height in stitches ÷ Fabric Count) + Border Allowance

Border allowance: 3 inches on each side is the usual minimum, which is what the margin field defaults to. Allow 4 or more if the finished piece is going into a frame or being mounted, since the mounting eats fabric you will never see again.

Fabric count (Aida cloth standard):

  • 11-count Aida: 11 stitches per inch, large and forgiving, good for children and for anyone whose eyes have had enough
  • 14-count Aida: the default, and what most published patterns assume
  • 16-count Aida: noticeably finer, and the point at which a lot of people start reaching for a magnifier
  • 18-count Aida: fine work. The same pattern comes out about 78% as wide and 78% as tall as it would on 14-count, which is a little under two-thirds of the area

Evenweave and linen are counted differently because you stitch over two threads rather than one. A 28-count evenweave worked over 2 gives you 14 stitches per inch, so pick 14-count above and the numbers come out right. The same trick maps 32-count linen to 16, and 22-count to 11.

How many skeins

A DMC or Anchor skein is 8 metres, about 315 inches, of 6-strand floss. That is not 315 inches of stitching thread, because you separate the bundle: at the usual 2 strands you get three working lengths from every inch on the skein, so a skein holds nearer 945 inches of usable thread. Missing that step is why so many thread estimates come out roughly three times too high.

The number worth committing to memory instead:

One 8-metre skein covers about 1,500 full cross stitches on 14-count with 2 strands.

It is the long-standing craft rule of thumb and it already allows for the tails you throw away when starting and ending. Finer fabric means smaller stitches, so the coverage scales with the count:

Stitches per skein ≈ 1,500 × (fabric count ÷ 14)

At 18-count that is about 1,930 stitches per skein; at 11-count, about 1,180.

Skeins = Total stitches ÷ Stitches per skein

That total is the thread you will actually consume. What you buy is different, because floss is sold by the whole skein in each colour. A chart with 30 colours needs at least 30 skeins no matter how small the design is. Count your colours off the chart, buy one skein of each as a floor, and add a second of anything covering a large area.

Colour note: buy the whole palette in one trip and check the dye lot numbers match. Two skeins of the same colour from different lots can read as a visible band across a stretch of sky, and matching a lot after the fact is close to impossible.

Worked example: Design: 120 × 90 stitches. Coverage: 70% of the grid. Fabric: 14-count Aida. 2 strands. 3" margin each side.

  • Fabric: (120 ÷ 14) + 6 inches = 8.6 + 6 = 14.6 inches wide; (90 ÷ 14) + 6 = 12.4 inches tall, so ask for a 16" × 14" piece
  • Total stitches: 120 × 90 × 0.70 = 7,560 stitches
  • Skeins consumed: 7,560 ÷ 1,500 = 5.1 skeins
  • If that design uses 20 colours, you buy 20 skeins and use about a quarter of each
