Book Reading Time Calculator
Estimate time to finish a book from page count, words per page, and reading speed.
Returns total hours with a daily schedule to finish by your target date.
Estimating reading time for a book requires knowing your reading speed (words per minute), the book’s word count, and how long your typical reading sessions are. This helps you set realistic reading goals and schedule your way through a to-read list.
The core formula: Reading Time (hours) = Word Count / (Words Per Minute × 60) Sessions Needed = Reading Time / Session Length
Average reading speeds:
- Slow reader: 150–200 WPM
- Average adult: 200–300 WPM (most reading speed studies cluster here)
- Fast reader: 300–400 WPM
- Speed reader: 500–1,000+ WPM (comprehension often drops significantly above 400)
Typical book word counts:
- Short novella: 20,000–40,000 words
- Average novel: 70,000–90,000 words
- Long novel (epic fantasy): 150,000–300,000 words
- Non-fiction business book: 50,000–70,000 words
- Non-fiction academic: 80,000–120,000 words
Worked example: Reading a 320-page thriller (~80,000 words) at 250 WPM, in 30-minute sessions: Reading time = 80,000 / (250 × 60) = 80,000 / 15,000 = 5.33 hours Sessions needed = 5.33 hours / 0.5 hours = 10.67 → 11 sessions At one session per day: finish in 11 days
Pages per hour: Pages per Hour = Words per Hour / Average Words per Page Average trade paperback: ~250–300 words/page At 250 WPM: 15,000 words/hr / 275 words/page = ~55 pages/hour
Annual reading goal math: To read 52 books/year (~1 per week), averaging 75,000 words each at 250 WPM: 52 × 5 hours = 260 hours/year = 43 minutes per day of reading
