Horse Stall Bedding Volume
Bedding requirements depend on stall area, bedding depth, and bedding type (compaction differs).
Standard stall sizes:
| Type | Dimensions | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Pony stall | 8’ × 10' | 80 sq ft |
| Standard horse | 10’ × 10’ or 12’ × 10' | 100-120 sq ft |
| Large horse / draft | 12’ × 14' | 168 sq ft |
| Foaling stall | 12’ × 16' | 192 sq ft |
Recommended bedding depth:
- Hard stall floor (concrete, mat): 8-10 inches initial
- Stall mats present: 4-6 inches initial
- Deep litter system: 12+ inches, mucked weekly only
Volume formula: Cubic feet = Area × Depth (in inches) ÷ 12
For a 10×12 stall (120 sq ft) at 6 inch depth: 120 × 6 ÷ 12 = 60 cubic feet of bedding.
Bedding compression ratios (compressed bag → loose volume):
| Bedding | Bag Size | Expanded Volume |
|---|---|---|
| Pine shavings (compressed bale) | 3.0 cu ft compressed | ~8-9 cu ft loose |
| Pine pellets (compressed) | 40 lb bag | ~5-6 cu ft expanded |
| Straw (small square bale) | 2-2.5 cu ft | ~6-8 cu ft fluffed |
| Straw (large round) | 30-50 cu ft | spread thin in stall |
Weekly maintenance volume (per stall, after mucking):
- Pine shavings: 1-2 compressed bags / week
- Pine pellets: 1 bag / week (when activated)
- Straw: 1 small square bale / week
- Cardboard / paper: 1.5 bags / week
- Hemp: 0.5 bags / week (longer life)
Cost estimates (US, 2026):
| Bedding | Cost per Bag | Cost per Stall/Year |
|---|---|---|
| Pine shavings | $5-8 | $400-700 |
| Pine pellets | $7-10 | $400-650 |
| Straw | $5-9 (square) | $350-700 |
| Hemp | $20-30 | $700-1,100 |
| Cardboard | $10-15 | $700-1,200 |
Mucking frequency:
- Daily mucking + small refresh: ~1 bag / week
- Deep clean weekly (full strip): 6-8 bags
- Deep litter: full strip 1-2× per year (12+ bags)
Drainage tips:
- Stall mats reduce bedding need by 40-60%
- French drains under high-urination spots prevent ammonia buildup
- Good ventilation extends bedding life by 30%
Pellet activation tip: Pine pellets must be fluffed up with water (1 gallon per bag) before use. Spread, mist, then break up by hand or shovel after 30 min. Skipping this step makes them painful for hooves.
