Candle Burn Time Calculator

Estimate how long a candle will last based on its weight and type.
Plan for events, emergencies, or relaxation sessions.

Estimated Burn Time

Candle burn time depends primarily on the weight of the candle and the type of wax used. Different wax types burn at different rates, so two candles of the same weight can last very different amounts of time.

The formula:

Burn Time (hours) = Candle Weight (oz or g) × Burn Rate per unit weight

Burn rates by wax type (approximate):

Wax Type Hours per Ounce Hours per 100g
Soy wax 7–8 hours/oz 25–28 hours/100g
Paraffin wax 5–6 hours/oz 18–21 hours/100g
Beeswax 8–9 hours/oz 28–32 hours/100g
Coconut wax 7–8 hours/oz 25–28 hours/100g
Palm wax 6–7 hours/oz 21–25 hours/100g

Why wax type matters:

Soy and beeswax candles burn slower because they have a higher melting point. Paraffin burns faster but is the most affordable option. Beeswax is the longest-lasting but also the most expensive.

Factors that affect actual burn time:

  • Wick size — a thicker wick creates a larger flame and burns wax faster
  • Drafts — wind or air currents cause uneven and faster burning
  • Container shape — wider candles burn differently than tall narrow ones
  • Altitude — candles burn slightly faster at higher elevations due to lower air pressure
  • Fragrance oils — heavily scented candles may burn 5–10% faster

Candle care tips for maximum burn time:

  • Trim the wick to 1/4 inch (6 mm) before each use
  • Burn for at least 1 hour per inch of diameter on the first use to prevent tunneling
  • Keep away from drafts and vents
  • Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time
  • A well-maintained candle can last up to 20% longer than a neglected one

Common candle sizes for reference:

  • Tea light: 0.5 oz (14g) — 4–5 hours
  • Votive: 2 oz (57g) — 10–15 hours
  • Small jar: 4 oz (113g) — 25–35 hours
  • Medium jar: 8 oz (227g) — 45–65 hours
  • Large jar: 16 oz (454g) — 80–120 hours
  • Pillar (3×6 in): 20 oz (567g) — 100–150 hours
