Date Difference Calculator

Calculate exact days, weeks, months, and years between two dates.
Find time until an event, time elapsed since a date, or days between any two calendar dates.

Time Between Dates

Calculating the number of days between two dates seems simple but involves accounting for varying month lengths, leap years, and calendar rules. Understanding the underlying math helps verify results and handle edge cases correctly.

The core concept: Convert both dates to a day count from a fixed reference point (e.g., January 1, year 1), then subtract: Days Between = Day Number of End Date − Day Number of Start Date

Leap year rule (Gregorian calendar): A year is a leap year (366 days) if:

  • Divisible by 4, AND
  • Not divisible by 100, OR
  • Divisible by 400

So: 2000 = leap year ✓, 1900 = NOT a leap year ✓, 2024 = leap year ✓

Manual calculation — rough method: Days = (Years × 365) + Leap Days + Month Days + Day Offset

Worked example: From March 15, 2023 to November 8, 2024:

  • March 15 to March 15, 2024: 366 days (2024 is a leap year)
  • March 15 to November 8, 2024:
    • March 16–31: 16 days
    • April: 30, May: 31, June: 30, July: 31, Aug: 31, Sep: 30, Oct: 31 = 184 days
    • Nov 1–8: 8 days
    • Total = 16 + 184 + 8 = 208 days
  • Grand total: 366 + 208 = 574 days

Common uses:

  • Project deadlines and countdowns
  • Age calculation in days
  • Lease terms (30-day vs calendar month)
  • Loan interest calculations (interest accrues daily on many loans)
  • “Days since” tracking (exercise streaks, sobriety, events)

Business days: Subtract weekends (×2/7 of total days approximately) and public holidays. On average, about 71% of calendar days are business days in the US.
