Self Storage Monthly Cost Calculator

Estimate monthly self-storage cost from unit size, your base rate per sq ft, location tier, and rental duration.
Covers 5x5 to 10x30 storage units.

Budget non-climate baseline; the location and climate options scale it. Typical: $0.70-1.20/sq ft non-climate, higher for climate-controlled.
Storage Cost Estimate

Self-storage units are rented by the month and priced based on unit size, location, climate control, and access type. Accurately estimating your needs prevents paying for excess space or being forced to upgrade mid-rental.

Monthly cost formula: Monthly Cost = Unit Size (sq ft) × Price per Square Foot

Annual cost: Annual Cost = Monthly Cost × 12 + Move-in Fees + Insurance

Unit size guide:

Unit Size Space Equivalent Best For
5×5 (25 sq ft) Large closet Boxes, small furniture
5×10 (50 sq ft) Walk-in closet Studio apartment contents
10×10 (100 sq ft) Half a one-car garage 1-bedroom apartment
10×15 (150 sq ft) One-car garage 2-bedroom apartment
10×20 (200 sq ft) Standard garage 3-bedroom home
10×30 (300 sq ft) Large garage Full house contents

Average price per square foot (U.S. 2025):

  • Non-climate-controlled: $0.70–$1.20/sq ft/month
  • Climate-controlled: $1.10–$2.00/sq ft/month

Climate control premium: typically 25–50% more expensive but essential for wood furniture, electronics, documents, artwork, wine, and musical instruments.

These per-square-foot figures are typical US ranges and shift by metro, demand, and year. Enter your own base price per sq ft in the calculator, then use the location and climate options to adjust it.

Volume-based formula (cubic feet method): Cubic Feet Needed = Σ (Item Length × Width × Height) Divide by the unit ceiling height (typically 8 ft) to estimate required floor area.

Worked example: A 10×10 climate-controlled unit at $1.50/sq ft: Monthly = 100 × $1.50 = $150/month Annual = $150 × 12 + $25 admin fee + $120 insurance = $1,945/year

Cost-saving tips: Rent during off-peak months (January–February). Ask about first-month-free promotions. Sharing a 10×20 unit with a friend or neighbor is common and splits costs in half.
