Storage Unit Size Calculator

Estimate the right storage unit size based on your furniture and belongings inventory.

Recommended Storage Size

Choosing the right storage unit size prevents paying for unused space or struggling to fit everything into a unit that is too small. This calculator estimates the total volume of your belongings and recommends the appropriate storage unit size.

How the calculation works: Each category of belongings is assigned an approximate cubic footage value based on typical furniture dimensions. The total cubic footage is then compared to standard storage unit sizes, accounting for approximately 70% space utilization (because items cannot be packed with 100% efficiency due to irregular shapes).

Required Unit Volume = Total Item Volume / 0.70 (packing efficiency)

Standard self-storage unit sizes:

  • 5×5 (25 sq ft): Walk-in closet size. Holds boxes, seasonal items, small furniture. About 200 cubic feet with 8-foot ceiling.
  • 5×10 (50 sq ft): Half a standard garage. Holds a studio apartment or small one-bedroom. About 400 cubic feet.
  • 10×10 (100 sq ft): One-car garage size. Holds a full one-bedroom apartment. About 800 cubic feet.
  • 10×15 (150 sq ft): Large enough for a two-bedroom apartment or home. About 1,200 cubic feet.
  • 10×20 (200 sq ft): Standard one-car garage. Holds a three-bedroom home or includes a vehicle. About 1,600 cubic feet.
  • 10×30 (300 sq ft): Holds a four-bedroom home or multiple rooms plus vehicles. About 2,400 cubic feet.

Typical item volumes:

  • Couch/sofa: 40-60 cubic feet
  • Bed frame + mattress (queen): 50-70 cubic feet
  • Dresser: 25-40 cubic feet
  • Dining table + chairs: 35-50 cubic feet
  • Desk: 20-30 cubic feet
  • Bookshelf: 15-25 cubic feet
  • Moving box (medium): 3-4 cubic feet each
  • Washer or dryer: 25-30 cubic feet each
  • Refrigerator: 40-60 cubic feet

Tips for maximizing space: Disassemble furniture when possible to reduce volume. Place heavy items on the bottom and lighter boxes on top. Leave a narrow aisle for access to items at the back. Use shelf units inside the storage unit to stack boxes efficiently. Fill drawers and appliance interiors with smaller items.

Climate-controlled units: If storing electronics, wooden furniture, photos, or anything sensitive to temperature and humidity, choose a climate-controlled unit. These maintain temperatures between 55-80°F and control humidity. They cost 20-50% more but prevent damage from extreme temperatures and moisture.
