Ideal Mounting Height

The ideal TV mounting height places the center of the screen at eye level when seated, with a slight downward viewing angle. This prevents neck strain and provides the most comfortable viewing experience for extended periods.

The basic rule: Screen Center Height = Seated Eye Height

That is the whole rule, and it is worth stating plainly because it gets dressed up into something more complicated than it is. Put the middle of the picture where your eyes already are. For most people on a standard sofa, seated eye height is 42 to 44 inches (107-112 cm) from the floor.

Turning that into a mounting measurement: Wall mounts are installed by measuring from the floor, and what you actually mark on the wall is where the bottom of the TV lands:

Bottom of TV from floor = Eye Level − (Screen Height ÷ 2)

For a 55-inch TV (screen height about 27 inches) and a 42-inch eye level: Bottom edge = 42 − (27 ÷ 2) = 42 − 13.5 = 28.5 inches from the floor

So the bottom of the TV sits about 28-29 inches up. Nothing is being subtracted twice here: the centre is at eye level, and the bottom edge is simply half a screen lower.

TV screen dimensions by diagonal size: TVs are measured diagonally with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The screen height is approximately: Screen Height = Diagonal × sin(arctan(9/16)) = Diagonal × 0.49 Screen Width = Diagonal × cos(arctan(9/16)) = Diagonal × 0.87

Common sizes:

  • 43-inch TV: ~21" tall × 37.5" wide
  • 50-inch TV: ~24.5" tall × 43.6" wide
  • 55-inch TV: ~27" tall × 48" wide
  • 65-inch TV: ~32" tall × 56.7" wide
  • 75-inch TV: ~36.8" tall × 65.4" wide
  • 85-inch TV: ~41.7" tall × 74.1" wide

Viewing distance recommendations: The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommends a horizontal viewing angle of about 30 degrees, which works out to 1.63 times the screen diagonal. THX allows up to 40 degrees, which is 1.20 times the diagonal. Between those two figures is the band worth sitting in:

  • 55-inch TV: 5.5-7.5 feet (1.7-2.3 m)
  • 65-inch TV: 6.5-8.8 feet (2.0-2.7 m)
  • 75-inch TV: 7.5-10.2 feet (2.3-3.1 m)

Older guidance puts these numbers much further back, often 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal. That rule dates from 1080p, where sitting close enough to fill 40 degrees meant seeing the pixel grid. On a 4K panel it no longer applies, and following it leaves you with a screen that feels two sizes too small.

Above a fireplace, which is what most people are actually asking

A mantel forces the TV up, and the question is how far up is too far. The honest answer is a number: work out the angle your neck has to hold. If the screen centre ends up 20 inches above eye level and you sit 9 feet back, that is atan(20 ÷ 108) = about 10.5 degrees of permanent upward gaze. Ten degrees is fine for a film. Twenty is not, and no tilting mount fixes it, because tilting only squares the panel to your eye line. It does not move your neck back down.

Two things help and one does not. A tilting mount (5-10 degrees down) genuinely improves the picture, since LCD panels lose contrast badly when viewed off-axis and an untilted high TV is being viewed off-axis all evening. Sitting further back helps, because the same height difference becomes a smaller angle. Buying a bigger TV does not help at all: the centre stays where the bracket puts it.

Other seating: for bedroom TVs viewed from bed, mount higher with a 10-15 degree downward tilt. For standing desk setups, raise the centre to approximately 47-50 inches.

Mounting hardware note: Ensure your wall mount is rated for your TV’s weight and VESA pattern. Always mount into wall studs or use appropriate wall anchors for drywall.
