Black Friday Deal Worth Calculator

Black Friday started in the United States as the Friday after Thanksgiving and has since spread almost everywhere. It traditionally opens the holiday shopping season. Retailers cut prices hard, but not every cut is what it looks like. Some quietly raise the “original” price weeks beforehand, so a 50% discount lands you at a price that was only 10% lower on a normal week in October.

This calculator helps you cut through the marketing hype and assess whether a deal is actually worth buying.

The True Savings Formula

True savings = Original price − Sale price Percentage saved = (Original price − Sale price) ÷ Original price × 100

However, a big discount doesn’t automatically mean it’s worth buying. Several other factors matter:

Factors to Consider

1. Would you buy this at full price? If you wouldn’t buy it at $150, you’re not saving $75, you’re spending $75 you didn’t plan to spend.

2. Price history: Has this item been cheaper before? Tools like CamelCamelCamel (for Amazon) and Google Shopping history can reveal if the “original price” is inflated.

3. Urgency vs genuine need: Limited-time pressure is a sales tactic. A deal is only a deal if you genuinely need or want the item.

4. Quality and reviews: A discounted poor-quality item is still a poor purchase.

5. Return policy: Does the sale change the return window?

This calculator produces a Deal Score out of 100 from three things:

• Discount percentage (0–45 points, maxing out at 50% off)
• Whether you genuinely need it (0–35 points)
• Whether you’ve checked the price history (0–20 points)

Note how little of the score the discount actually controls. A 70%-off tag on something you had no plans to buy still only reaches the low 50s, which lands in “Moderate”. That is deliberate. The discount is the part the retailer chose. The other two are the parts that decide whether the money was well spent.
