Tip Calculator
Calculate tip amount and total bill for any percentage split among any number of people.
Shows 15%, 18%, 20%, and 25% options with per-person totals.
A tip (gratuity) is a voluntary payment added to a bill to reward good service. Tip calculations are done as a percentage of the pre-tax subtotal or, in some countries, the full bill amount including tax.
The formula: Tip amount = Bill × (Tip percentage / 100) Total to pay = Bill + Tip amount
Standard tipping rates by country and context:
United States:
- Restaurants: 15–20% (18–22% for excellent service)
- Bars: £1–2 per drink or 15–20% of tab
- Taxi/rideshare: 10–15%
- Hotel housekeeping: $2–5 per night
- Food delivery: 15–20% of order value
- Hairdresser: 15–20%
United Kingdom:
- Restaurants: 10–15% (often optional/expected)
- Taxi: round up to nearest pound
- Not expected at bars or fast food
Europe:
- France, Germany, Spain: rounding up or 5–10% for good service
- Italy: 10–15% in tourist areas, less elsewhere
Splitting among multiple people: Total with tip ÷ number of people = amount per person
Worked example: Restaurant bill: £85.00 Desired tip: 15% Tip amount = £85 × 0.15 = £12.75 Total = £85 + £12.75 = £97.75 Split between 4 people = £97.75 / 4 = £24.44 each
Service charge vs tip: Many UK restaurants add a 12.5% “discretionary service charge” to the bill automatically. You are legally entitled to remove it if service was poor — it is not mandatory. Check your bill before adding an additional tip on top.
