Game Backlog Completion Time Calculator
Find out how long it will take to finish your game backlog based on the number of games, average hours per game, and how much you play per week.
The backlog problem
The average gamer owns far more games than they will ever finish. Between Steam sales, Humble Bundles, PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass, and impulse purchases, game libraries have grown much faster than available playtime. Studies suggest the average Steam user has played less than 40% of their owned games.
How this calculator works
The calculation is straightforward:
Total Hours Needed = Number of Games × Average Hours per Game Weeks to Complete = Total Hours Needed ÷ Weekly Playtime
Average completion times by game type
Understanding realistic per-game averages helps you set honest expectations:
- Indie / short games: 4–8 hours (platformers, visual novels, puzzle games)
- Action / adventure: 10–20 hours (standard AAA story campaigns)
- Open-world / RPG: 30–60 hours (e.g., Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn)
- MMO / live service: essentially unlimited — these should not be in a backlog estimate
- JRPG / epic RPG: 60–120 hours (e.g., Persona 5, Final Fantasy titles)
- Roguelikes: 10–30 hours to see all content
A common backlog average across mixed libraries is approximately 15–20 hours per game.
Gaming without burnout
Research on gaming habits suggests 1–2 hours of gaming per weekday and 2–4 hours per weekend day is typical for casual-to-moderate gamers, totalling roughly 9–18 hours per week. Attempting to rush through a large backlog often leads to gaming fatigue and enjoyment loss.
The goal of a backlog calculator is not to create stress, but to set realistic expectations and help you prioritise which games matter most to you.
