Lawn Mowing Time Calculator

Estimate lawn mowing time from area, mower deck width, and walking speed.
Covers push, self-propelled, and riding mowers with overlap and turnaround time.

Mowing Time

Estimating lawn mowing time and cost helps homeowners budget for lawn care services and helps professionals price jobs accurately. The key variables are lawn area, mower width, walking speed, and obstacles.

Key formulas:

Theoretical Mowing Time = Lawn Area ÷ (Mower Width × Walking Speed) Practical Time = Theoretical Time × Efficiency Factor (typically 0.75–0.85 due to turns and obstacles) Mowing Cost = Time × Hourly Rate + Setup Fee (if any)

What each variable means:

  • Lawn Area — measured in square feet or square meters. For irregular lawns, break into rectangles and sum.
  • Mower Width (cutting deck): Walk-behind: 20–30 inches | Self-propelled: 21–22 inches | Zero-turn rider: 42–72 inches.
  • Walking Speed: Push mower: ~2.5 mph | Self-propelled: ~3–4 mph | Rider: ~5–8 mph.
  • Efficiency Factor — accounts for turning at row ends, trimming around obstacles, and overlapping passes. Typical value: 0.80.
  • Hourly Rate — professional services: $25–$60/hour; varies by region and service level.

Worked example: Lawn: 8,000 sq ft. Self-propelled mower, 21-inch cutting deck, walking at 3 mph.

Mower width in feet = 21 ÷ 12 = 1.75 ft Theoretical rate = 1.75 ft × (3 mph × 5,280 ft/mi ÷ 60 min) = 1.75 × 264 = 462 sq ft/min Theoretical time = 8,000 ÷ 462 = 17.3 minutes Practical time = 17.3 ÷ 0.80 = 21.6 minutes

Professional pricing benchmarks:

  • Under 5,000 sq ft: $35–$55/mow
  • 5,000–10,000 sq ft: $50–$80/mow
  • 10,000–20,000 sq ft: $75–$130/mow
  • Includes mowing, edging, and blowing clippings off hard surfaces.
