How Mulch Depth and Quantity Are Calculated
Mulch suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and regulates soil temperature. The right depth maximizes these benefits without suffocating roots.
Mulch Volume Formula:
Volume (m³) = Area (m²) × Depth (m)
Converting to Bags: Bagged mulch is sold by volume, and the two sizes on most shelves are the 2 cubic foot bag (57 litres) and the 3 cubic foot bag (85 litres). Some garden centres outside North America sell a 40 or 60 litre bag instead, so check the print before you divide.

Two things set the depth, and the calculator uses both
The first is what you are mulching. An annual bed wants a thin layer that seedlings can push through; a path or a weed-suppression job wants as much as you can put down.
The second is the material, and this is the part most depth charts leave out. Coarse, chunky material needs more depth to block light, because light gets through the gaps between the pieces. Fine material needs less, and going deep with it is actively harmful because it mats down into a water-shedding crust.

Worked Example: Garden bed: 4m × 6m = 24 m² (258 sq ft), shrubs and trees, coarse wood chips.
- Base depth for shrubs and trees: 3.5 in (9 cm)
- Wood chips are coarse, so × 1.15 = 4 in (10 cm)
- Volume = 258 × (4 ÷ 12) = 86 cubic feet = 2.44 m³
- Bags (2 cu ft / 57 L each) = 86 ÷ 2 = 44 bags
- Or 3.19 cubic yards, so order 3.5 yards bulk (1 cubic yard ≈ 0.765 m³)

Critical Rules:
- Keep mulch 5–8 cm away from plant stems. Contact causes crown rot and invites pests.
- Around 10 cm is the ceiling for a planted bed. Deeper than that creates anaerobic conditions underneath and gives slugs somewhere to live. Paths and weed-suppression jobs go deeper on purpose, because nothing is trying to grow up through them.
- Refresh organic mulch annually as it decomposes into the soil.
- Apply after the soil has warmed in spring. Mulch laid on cold soil insulates the cold in.
- Wet the soil before mulching to lock in the moisture that is already there.
