Frit is crushed glass used to add color, pattern, and texture to a hot glass piece. Coverage depends on frit grade (particle size) and density of application.

Standard frit grades:

Coverage density adjustments:

  • Full opaque coverage: 100% of base rate
  • Full transparent layer: 70% of base rate
  • Accent / partial coverage: 30-50% of base rate
  • Light dusting / breath of color: 10-20%

Practical considerations:

  • Always order 15-20% extra: frit lost in handling, oversprayed onto bench, and saved for follow-up touches
  • Sift frit by hand for the cleanest application; uneven sifting wastes 25-40%
  • Powder frit airborne dust is a respiratory hazard: use a dust mask or HEPA vent
  • Borosilicate frit costs 2-3× soft glass frit but provides predictable color in lampwork

For a 6-inch sphere (surface area ~113 sq in):

  • Full medium coverage: ~135 grams (5 oz)
  • Accent coverage (40%): ~55 grams (2 oz)
  • Powder color wash: ~57 grams (2 oz)
