Frit Coverage Estimation
Frit is crushed glass used to add color, pattern, and texture to a hot glass piece. Coverage depends on frit grade (particle size) and density of application.
Standard frit grades:

Coverage density adjustments:
- Full opaque coverage: 100% of base rate
- Full transparent layer: 70% of base rate
- Accent / partial coverage: 30-50% of base rate
- Light dusting / breath of color: 10-20%
Practical considerations:
- Always order 15-20% extra. Frit gets lost in handling, scattered across the bench, and held back for follow-up touches
- Sift by hand for the cleanest application. Uneven sifting wastes a quarter to a third of what you pour
- Powder frit dust is a genuine respiratory hazard, and some colours carry cadmium or selenium. Wear a fitted dust mask or work under HEPA extraction, and never sweep it dry
- Borosilicate frit costs several times what soft glass frit does, though it gives more predictable colour in lampwork. Prices move, so check current rates rather than a ratio
Work out the surface area first
The calculator takes an area, and that is the part people guess at. A sphere is 4πr², a cylinder’s side is 2πrh, and a cone’s is πrl. Guessing low here is the most common reason an order comes up short.
For a 6-inch sphere (diameter 6 in, so 4π × 3² ≈ 113 sq in):
- Full medium coverage: 113 × 1.3 = 147 grams, about 5 oz
- Accent coverage at 40%: 59 grams, about 2 oz
- Powder colour wash: 113 × 0.5 = 57 grams, about 2 oz
Those are before the spare. The calculator adds 18% on top, which is what you should actually order.
