Pack Status

Never running out of birth control pills is critical for their effectiveness. This calculator helps you track exactly where you are in your pill pack and when you need to order a refill — giving you enough lead time so you never miss a dose or skip a pack.

How Combination Pill Packs Work

Most oral contraceptive packs come in two formats:

  • 21-day pack: 21 active hormone pills, followed by a 7-day pill-free break. Your period typically arrives during the break.
  • 28-day pack: 21 or 24 active pills + 7 or 4 placebo (inactive) reminder pills. You take a pill every day with no break.

Why Refill Timing Matters

Pharmacies sometimes require a prior authorization or have stock delays. It is recommended to request a refill at least 5–7 days before your current pack ends. Some people prefer a 14-day buffer to account for shipping (if ordering online) or insurance processing delays.

The Calculation

  • Pills Remaining = Pack Size − Pills Taken
  • Days Until Pack Ends = Pills Remaining (one pill per day)
  • Suggested Refill Date = Today + (Days Until Pack End − Refill Buffer Days)

Example: 28-Day Pack

If you are on day 18 of a 28-day pack:

  • Pills remaining = 28 − 18 = 10 pills
  • Days until pack ends = 10 days
  • With a 7-day buffer: order refill in 3 days

Consistency is Key

For maximum effectiveness, combination pills should be taken at the same time every day. A variance of more than 12 hours may reduce protection. Progestin-only pills (mini-pills) require an even stricter 3-hour window.

Always consult your prescribing doctor or pharmacist about the specific instructions for your brand of contraception.
