Cycle Predictions

The menstrual cycle is a recurring hormonal process that prepares the uterus for potential pregnancy. Tracking cycle length, ovulation timing, and fertile windows helps with family planning, understanding personal health patterns, and identifying irregularities.

Key formulas: Cycle Length = First day of next period − First day of current period Ovulation Day ≈ Cycle Length − 14 Fertile Window = Ovulation Day − 5 to Ovulation Day + 1 Next Period Expected = Last Period Start Date + Cycle Length

What each variable means:

  • Cycle Length — counted from Day 1 (first day of bleeding) to the day before the next period starts; the “typical” range is 21–35 days, with 28 days being the statistical average
  • Ovulation Day — approximately 14 days before the next expected period (not 14 days after the last period — this only works for exactly 28-day cycles)
  • Fertile Window — the 6-day window when conception is most likely; sperm can survive 3–5 days inside the reproductive tract, so intercourse in the days before ovulation can still result in pregnancy
  • Luteal Phase — the post-ovulation phase; this is consistently ~14 days for most people and is what the “minus 14” formula is based on

Worked example: Last period started: January 5. Average cycle length: 32 days.

Next period expected: January 5 + 32 = February 6 Ovulation day: 32 − 14 = Day 18 (January 5 + 17 = January 22) Fertile window: January 17–23 (Days 13–19)

Important notes:

  • This calculator provides estimates only — ovulation can shift due to illness, stress, travel, or hormonal changes
  • The basal body temperature (BBT) method and LH surge tests (ovulation predictor kits) provide more accurate real-time ovulation confirmation
  • Cycles shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days, or significant irregularity, are worth discussing with a healthcare provider
  • Emergency contraception effectiveness also depends on where in the cycle it is taken
