What Is the GAD-7? The GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale) is a validated screening tool for generalized anxiety disorder. It was developed by Dr. Robert Spitzer and colleagues in 2006 in the United States. It is widely used in primary care and mental health settings as a quick, reliable screening instrument.
Scoring Scale Rate how often you have been bothered by each problem over the past 2 weeks:
- 0 = Not at all
- 1 = Several days
- 2 = More than half the days
- 3 = Nearly every day

When to Seek Help A score of 10 or above suggests significant anxiety that may benefit from professional evaluation. Anxiety and depression frequently co-occur — consider also completing the PHQ-9 depression screen.
