Pace Conversions

Running pace unit conversion translates pace between the two most common formats used worldwide: minutes per kilometer (used in most of the world) and minutes per mile (used primarily in the United States and United Kingdom). It also converts between pace and speed.

Core conversion formulas: min/km to min/mile: Pace (min/mile) = Pace (min/km) × 1.60934 min/mile to min/km: Pace (min/km) = Pace (min/mile) ÷ 1.60934

Pace to speed: Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ Pace (min/km) Speed (mph) = 60 ÷ Pace (min/mile)

Speed to pace: Pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ Speed (km/h) Pace (min/mile) = 60 ÷ Speed (mph)

What each variable means:

  • Pace: time to cover one unit of distance. Expressed as mm:ss (e.g., 5:30 = 5 minutes 30 seconds per km or per mile).
  • 1.60934: the exact conversion factor between miles and kilometers (1 mile = 1.60934 km).
  • Speed: distance divided by time, expressed as km/h or mph. Runners sometimes use speed on treadmills but pace for race training.

Common race finish times at typical paces:

Pace 5K 10K Half marathon Full marathon
4:00/km (6:26/mi) 20:00 40:00 1:24:24 2:48:47
5:00/km (8:03/mi) 25:00 50:00 1:45:29 3:30:59
6:00/km (9:39/mi) 30:00 1:00:00 2:06:35 4:13:11
7:00/km (11:16/mi) 35:00 1:10:00 2:27:41 4:55:22

Worked example: A runner trains at 5:45 per kilometer and wants to know their pace per mile and expected finish times.

Pace (min/mile) = 5:45/km × 1.60934 = 5.75 min/km × 1.60934 = 9:15/mile (9 min 15 sec) Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ 5.75 = 10.43 km/h Speed (mph) = 60 ÷ 9.25 = 6.49 mph

Race finish time estimates at 5:45/km pace:

  • 5K: 5.75 × 5.0 = 28:45
  • 10K: 5.75 × 10 = 57:30
  • Half marathon: 5.75 × 21.1 = 121:20 ≈ 2:01:20
  • Full marathon: 5.75 × 42.2 = 242:39 ≈ 4:02:39

Pace–speed quick reference:

Pace (min/mi) Pace (min/km) Speed (mph) Speed (km/h)
6:00 3:43 10.0 16.1
7:00 4:21 8.6 13.8
8:00 4:58 7.5 12.1
9:00 5:35 6.7 10.7
10:00 6:13 6.0 9.7
11:00 6:50 5.5 8.8
12:00 7:27 5.0 8.0

Race pace usually differs from training pace. Most runners race 30 to 60 seconds per mile faster than their average training pace. If you train at 9:30/mi, expect a race pace closer to 8:45/mi at full effort. The taper week before a race (reduced mileage, full recovery) plus race-day adrenaline accounts for most of the difference. Don’t pace your race off training-pace splits.
