Probiotics Dosage Calculator
Calculate the right probiotic dosage based on your health goal, age, and CFU needs.
Includes guidance for adults, children, and specific conditions.
Probiotics are live microorganisms — typically bacteria or yeast — that provide health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. The dosage is measured in CFU, which stands for Colony Forming Units. This number tells you how many live organisms are present in a single dose.
There is no single universal dose for everyone. The right amount depends on your age, health condition, and the specific reason you are taking probiotics. General guidelines have been developed from clinical studies across dozens of conditions.
For general gut health maintenance in healthy adults, a dose of 1 to 10 billion CFU per day is typical. For targeted therapeutic use — such as after antibiotic treatment, for IBS, or for immune support — doses of 10 to 50 billion CFU are common. Some clinical protocols for serious conditions use doses above 100 billion CFU, but these should only be taken under medical supervision.
Children typically need lower doses. Infants may be given 1 to 3 billion CFU, toddlers 2 to 5 billion CFU, and school-age children 5 to 10 billion CFU. Always use a probiotic strain that has been tested in the relevant age group.
Timing also matters. Most probiotics survive better when taken with food, as the stomach acid is diluted and transit time is slower. Specific strains like Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum are among the most researched and widely used.
Important note: CFU count at the time of manufacture differs from CFU count at expiry. A quality product maintains potency through its expiration date, not just at manufacturing. Always check the label for “guaranteed potency at expiry.”
This calculator provides a general guideline. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting probiotics, especially if you are immunocompromised, pregnant, or managing a chronic condition.
