Long Division Calculator
Perform long division with step-by-step working.
See the quotient, remainder, and decimal result with a complete division breakdown.
Long Division Components:
Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient remainder Remainder
Or equivalently:
Dividend = Divisor × Quotient + Remainder
Where:
- Dividend = the number being divided (the larger number)
- Divisor = the number you are dividing by
- Quotient = the whole-number result of the division
- Remainder = what is left over after the division
Steps of long division:
- Divide: How many times does the divisor fit into the current portion of the dividend?
- Multiply: Divisor times the digit you just found
- Subtract: Current portion minus the product from step 2
- Bring down: Pull the next digit from the dividend down next to the remainder
- Repeat steps 1-4 until no digits remain
Practical Example: 845 ÷ 6
- 6 goes into 8 once (6). Subtract: 8 - 6 = 2
- Bring down 4 to get 24. 6 goes into 24 four times (24). Subtract: 24 - 24 = 0
- Bring down 5. 6 goes into 5 zero times. Remainder: 5
- Result: 140 remainder 5
- Verify: 6 x 140 + 5 = 845
When to use long division: This calculator is helpful for students learning division step by step, for checking homework, or for any situation where you need to see the full working. It is especially useful when dividing by multi-digit numbers where mental math becomes difficult.
Tips:
- Always verify your answer: Divisor x Quotient + Remainder should equal the Dividend
- If the remainder is 0, the dividend is evenly divisible by the divisor
- To convert the remainder to a decimal, continue dividing by adding a decimal point and zeros to the dividend
How we build and check this calculator
