How to Interpret Results

A candidate with over 50% of the vote has an absolute majority. Many elections are decided by plurality instead: the candidate with the most votes wins, majority or not. The winning margin is the percentage-point difference between the top two candidates.

Percentage points and percent are not the same thing, and news coverage mixes them up constantly. A lead of 51.1% against 35.2% is 15.9 percentage points. As a percentage it is a 45% lead, since 15.9 is 45% of 35.2. Both are true; only one is usually meant.

Example

Suppose an election has 3 candidates with 45,000, 31,000, and 12,000 votes:

• Total votes: 88,000
• Candidate A: 45,000 / 88,000 = 51.1% → winner with majority
• Candidate B: 31,000 / 88,000 = 35.2%
• Candidate C: 12,000 / 88,000 = 13.6%
• Winning margin: 51.1% − 35.2% = 15.9 percentage points

Spoiler Effect

When a third candidate takes votes from a frontrunner, it can change the outcome. Political scientists call this the spoiler effect, and it is a major subject in electoral system design. Ranked-choice voting exists largely to defuse it.
