Key Formulas
| Metric | Formula |
|---|---|
| Vote share | Candidate votes / Total votes × 100 |
| Winning margin | (Winner votes − Runner-up votes) / Total votes × 100 |
| Majority threshold | Total votes / 2 (need more than this to win majority) |
How to Interpret Results
A candidate with over 50% of the vote has an absolute majority. Many elections are decided by plurality — the candidate with the most votes wins, even without a majority. The winning margin is the percentage-point difference between the top two candidates.
Example
Suppose an election has 3 candidates with 45,000, 31,000, and 12,000 votes:
- Total votes: 88,000
- Candidate A: 45,000 / 88,000 = 51.1% → winner with majority
- Candidate B: 31,000 / 88,000 = 35.2%
- Candidate C: 12,000 / 88,000 = 13.6%
- Winning margin: 51.1% − 35.2% = 15.9 percentage points
Spoiler Effect
When a third candidate takes votes from a frontrunner, it can change the outcome. Political scientists call this the spoiler effect — a major subject in electoral system design.
Electoral Systems
Different countries use different rules: first-past-the-post, proportional representation, ranked-choice voting. This calculator shows raw vote shares — the first step in analyzing any election result.
