In bookbinding, a “signature” (also called a “gathering” or “quire”) is a group of sheets folded together and sewn as a unit. The number of sheets per signature and total signatures determine the book’s page count, spine thickness, and sewing pattern.

- Quarto: one sheet folded twice = 8 pages
- Octavo: one sheet folded three times = 16 pages
- Leaf: one piece of paper (front = recto, back = verso)
- Signature: a nested group of folded sheets sewn together
Page Count Formula
Total pages = Sheets per signature × Pages per sheet × Number of signatures
For a standard folio fold (one fold per sheet): Pages per sheet = 4 (front and back of two leaves) Total pages = Sheets per signature × 4 × Number of signatures
Spine Thickness Formula
Here is the step everyone drops. A folded sheet is two thicknesses of paper at the spine, not one. Fold 32 sheets and the stack is 64 layers deep, so:
Spine thickness = Number of signatures × Sheets per signature × 2 × Paper thickness × Swell factor
Sanity-check any answer against the page count instead of the sheet count. A 128-page book is 64 leaves, and 64 leaves of 0.12 mm paper is 7.7 mm of bare paper before a single stitch goes in. If a calculation hands you 5 mm for that book, it has lost the factor of two.
The swell factor then accounts for thread bulk and the air trapped between nested sheets. For hand-sewn books:
- Pamphlet stitch: swell factor = 1.1
- Coptic binding: swell factor = 1.3–1.5
- Case binding (tape/cord): swell factor = 1.2–1.4
- Japanese stab binding: swell factor = 1.0 (no swell, sheets stacked flat)

Worked Example: a 120-page Coptic-bound journal
Target: 120 pages. Folio fold gives 4 pages per sheet, and 4 sheets per signature is 16 pages per signature. Signatures = 120 / 16 = 7.5, so round up to 8 signatures, giving 128 pages. Total sheets = 8 × 4 = 32.
Using 90 gsm book text paper at 0.12 mm, with the Coptic swell factor of 1.4: Layers at the spine = 32 sheets × 2 = 64. Spine thickness = 64 × 0.12 × 1.4 = 10.8 mm.
Cut sheets to twice the page width plus 3 mm of trim allowance, by the page height plus 3 mm. For a 5 × 7 inch finished book that is 10.5 × 7.25 inches, folded in half, nested four to a signature, and sewn.
Grain Direction
Grain must run parallel to the spine, which means vertically in the finished book. Fold against the grain and the crease cracks, the pages fight you, and the book will never lie flat when opened. Test by bending the sheet gently each way without creasing it: it gives more easily along the grain.
This is the single most common reason a hand-bound book feels wrong. A beautifully sewn book with the grain running the wrong way will splay open, and there is no fixing it afterwards.
Cover Board Thickness
For case-bound (hardcover) books:
- Thin: 1.5 mm board (small books up to A5)
- Medium: 2.0 mm board (standard books)
- Thick: 3.0 mm board (large or heavy books)
Cover boards should overhang the text block by 3 mm on the top, bottom, and fore-edge (called the “square”).
