Why Material Cost Calculations Matter
Many pen turners undercharge at craft shows because they price by feel rather than by actual cost. The blank and kit are obvious costs, but sandpaper, finish, mandrel wear, and lathe electricity all add up. If you sell 50 pens per show and underestimate by $3 each, that is $150 of invisible loss per event.
The Main Cost Components
The blank is the wooden (or acrylic, resin, antler, etc.) tube from which the pen barrel is turned. Quality blanks range from $1 for common domestic wood to $30+ for premium burls or exotic resins.
The pen kit includes the mechanisms (twist, click, cap), hardware plating (gold, chrome, gunmetal), and tube for the barrel. Kits range from $3 for basic click pens to $25 for premium designer kits with rhodium plating.
Finish cost varies widely. CA (cyanoacrylate) glue as a finish costs roughly $0.50 to $1.50 per pen in product. Spray lacquer or friction polish is similar. Wipe-on poly or oil finishes tend to cost less per pen.
Sandpaper and buffing consumables typically run $0.50 to $2 per pen depending on how many grits you use.
Pricing at Craft Shows
The standard craft pricing formula is: materials x 3 = wholesale, materials x 5 to 6 = retail. A pen costing $12 in materials should retail for $60 to $72 to cover your time, booth fees, and profit margin. Many turners find the $30 to $60 range sweet spot at shows.
