Pet Bird Lifespan Calculator
Find out the typical lifespan of popular pet bird species and estimate how many years your bird has left based on its current age.
Birds live longer than most people expect
One of the most important — and most often overlooked — facts about pet birds is their longevity. Many species far outlive cats and dogs, and some parrots can outlive their owners. Committing to a pet bird is a serious, long-term responsibility.

| Cockatiel | 15–20 years | Common cause of death is fatty liver disease |
| Lovebird | 10–15 years | Social — does better in pairs |
| Conure (small) | 15–20 years | Active, loud, affectionate |
| Caique | 20–30 years | Playful; prone to obesity |

| Sun Conure | 20–30 years | Very loud; bright plumage |
What affects captive bird lifespan?
- Diet: Seed-only diets are a major cause of early death in parrots. A balanced diet of pellets, fresh vegetables, and limited seeds dramatically extends lifespan.
- Veterinary care: Annual avian vet check-ups catch problems early.
- Mental stimulation: Birds — especially parrots — suffer from boredom and stress without enrichment, toys, and social interaction.
- Housing: Proper cage size, perch variety, and temperature stability all matter.
- Toxins: Many household items are lethal to birds: Teflon (PTFE) fumes, scented candles, air fresheners, cigarette smoke, and certain houseplants.
