Cat Age Calculator

Convert your cat's age to human years using the modern veterinary formula — far more accurate than the outdated 7:1 rule for all feline life stages.

Human-Equivalent Age

Cat age in human years is not a simple 1:7 ratio like the popular dog myth — cats age very rapidly in their first two years, then slow down considerably.

The accepted conversion model (International Cat Care):

  • Year 1 of a cat’s life ≈ 15 human years
  • Year 2 adds approximately 9 more human years (total: ~24)
  • Each year after 2 = approximately 4 human years

Formula for cats older than 2 years: Human Age ≈ 24 + (Cat Age − 2) × 4

Where:

  • 24 = the human-equivalent age at the end of year 2
  • Cat Age = the cat’s actual age in years
  • 4 = human years per additional cat year

Conversion table:

Cat Age Human Equivalent Life Stage
1 year 15 years Adolescent
2 years 24 years Young adult
4 years 32 years Prime adult
6 years 40 years Mature adult
9 years 52 years Middle-aged
11 years 60 years Senior
14 years 72 years Geriatric
16 years 80 years Very old
20 years 96 years Exceptional

Worked example: Your cat is 11 years old. Human age = 24 + (11 − 2) × 4 = 24 + 36 = 60 human years

Why it matters for health care: A “senior” cat (11+) is equivalent to a person in their 60s–70s and benefits from twice-yearly vet checkups, kidney function monitoring, joint supplements, and dental care. Indoor cats live an average of 12–18 years; outdoor cats average only 5–7 years due to predators, traffic, and disease exposure.
