Lot Size to Acres Calculator

An acre is a unit of land area that confuses people because it is not a tidy round number. One acre is 43,560 square feet. That odd figure is a leftover from medieval farming: an acre was the area a team of oxen could plow in a day, defined as one chain (66 feet) wide by one furlong (660 feet) long. A 66 by 660 rectangle is exactly 43,560 square feet, and the definition stuck.

This calculator goes both ways. Enter a rectangular lot’s width and depth in feet and it multiplies them to get the area, or skip the dimensions and type a total square footage straight in if the parcel is an odd shape. Either way you get the size in acres, square feet, square meters, and hectares, so a listing quoted in any of those units becomes easy to compare. One hectare, the metric land unit, is 10,000 square meters, or about 2.47 acres.

To give the number a feel, the tool also compares your lot to an American football field. The playing area plus both end zones covers about 1.32 acres, so a one-acre lot is roughly three-quarters of a football field. People picture a field far more easily than they picture 43,560 square feet.

One caution worth stating plainly. A deeded lot size describes the legal parcel, not the buildable area. Setbacks from the property line, utility easements, steep slopes, and wetlands all shrink what you can actually use. For a boundary you can build to, you need a licensed survey, not an area calculation.
