Rowing Calorie Calculation

Calorie burn uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) formula:

Calories = MET × Body Weight (kg) × Duration (hours)

MET values by rowing intensity:

  • Light rowing / recovery (2:30+ split): MET 4.0
  • Moderate rowing (2:10-2:30 split): MET 6.0
  • Vigorous rowing (2:00-2:10 split): MET 8.5
  • Race pace / intense (under 2:00 split): MET 12.0

Pace to speed conversion: A 2:00/500m split = 500m every 2 minutes = 250m/min = 15 km/h

Concept2 erg formula (for comparison): The Concept2 uses a proprietary formula based on drag factor and stroke rate, giving very accurate watt-based calorie estimates. This calculator uses MET-based estimates for general rowing activities.

Calorie estimates are ±15% depending on rowing efficiency, water conditions, and individual metabolism.
