See how your stats compare to NBA norms.
Basketball player statistics are expressed as per-game averages, which allow fair comparison between players with different numbers of games played. The three most tracked stats are points, rebounds, and assists per game.
The per-game average formula: Stat Per Game = Total Season Stat / Games Played
Points Per Game (PPG): PPG = Total Points / Games Played
Rebounds Per Game (RPG): RPG = (Offensive Rebounds + Defensive Rebounds) / Games Played
Assists Per Game (APG): APG = Total Assists / Games Played
Worked example: After 24 games, a player has 432 points, 198 rebounds (62 offensive + 136 defensive), and 96 assists. PPG = 432 / 24 = 18.0 points per game RPG = 198 / 24 = 8.25 rebounds per game APG = 96 / 24 = 4.0 assists per game
Advanced stats:
- Field Goal % (FG%): (Field Goals Made / Field Goals Attempted) × 100
- Three-Point % (3P%): (3-Pointers Made / 3-Pointers Attempted) × 100
- Free Throw % (FT%): (FT Made / FT Attempted) × 100
- Player Efficiency Rating (PER): Complex composite (league average = 15.0)
- True Shooting % (TS%): Points / (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)) — accounts for free throws and threes
NBA career benchmarks (all-time greats):
- Michael Jordan: 30.1 PPG (career record), 6.2 RPG, 5.3 APG
- LeBron James: 27.1 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 7.4 APG
- An “All-Star caliber” season is generally considered: 20+ PPG, 5+ RPG, 5+ APG
Double-double: 10+ in two stat categories in one game. Triple-double: 10+ in three categories — rare and impressive.
