Bowling Stats

Bowling average is the most common way to measure a bowler’s skill level over time. It is calculated by dividing the total pins knocked down by the number of games played.

Average = Total Pins / Number of Games

This calculator also finds your high game (best score), low game (worst score), and total pins from the scores you enter.

What the numbers mean:

  • Each bowling game has 10 frames, with a maximum score of 300 (a perfect game, requiring 12 consecutive strikes).
  • A strike (all 10 pins on the first ball) and a spare (all 10 pins in two balls) earn bonus points from subsequent throws.

Bowling skill levels by average:

Average Skill Level
200+ Excellent / competitive league
170-199 Very good / experienced
140-169 Above average / intermediate
110-139 Average / casual bowler
80-109 Below average / occasional
Below 80 Beginner

Practical example: If your last five games were 145, 162, 138, 170, and 155, your total pins are 770. Your average is 770 / 5 = 154, which places you in the “above average” category. Your high game is 170 and your low game is 138.

Tips: League bowlers typically track their average over an entire season (30+ games) for a reliable number. A small sample of 3-5 games can swing wildly. To improve your average, focus on picking up spares consistently, as missed spares cost more points than most bowlers realize. Professional bowlers average between 220 and 240 in competition.
